Welcome to Croque-Maman! As a first post on this blog I really wanted to share with you a recipe that captures the essence of Croque-Maman: a quick and easy family recipe that you cook for/with children whatever their age and which makes them feel warm and welcome home.

The gâteau au yaourt is the most popular French family cake. It is so easy and fast to make that this is the first cake French children learn how to bake. I personally remember having been taught how to bake it at primary school! I was so proud, my first cake! It is tender and moist and mostly eaten as a goûter (French 4pm snack) or for breakfast. Its specificity is a single pot of yoghurt, which you keep to measure up the other ingredients and the recipe is pretty much as easy as counting from 1 to 4! Come on give it a try! It will only take you 5 minutes!

Recipe Notes

The variations to this recipe are endless and you can as such really easily create your own version of it. I personally love adding a hint of vanilla to the recipe but you can as well use orange blossom water, a flavoured yoghurt, lemon zest and juice … or even chocolate chips :-)

What are metric measurements for the ingredients instead of using a yoghurt pot?

I believe 150 grams is about 2/3 in cups.
(So a “pot” is that, and half is 1/3 cup)

      — hope that helps!

It’s better to separate the whites of the eggs and to beat them with a small pinch of salt till they become VERY hard
Then incorporate them by small quantifies turning always In the same sense.
If you Use a round mould, you can cut the cake horizontally In the middle and apply apricot jam, then close the cake and cover with melted chocolate. You have the perfect birthday cake. Specially if you spread M&S on top and put fingers standing all around!

Yes, the traditional way is with sunflower oil because France is a producer of sunflower oil however vegetable oil will do the trick.

Such a delightful cake! It’s in the oven now and we can’t wait to try. I am serving mine with fresh cut strawberries and homemade whipped cream. My husband is super excited too as he is Greek and grew up with a similar yoghurt cake. Somehow, though, I think our French version may win in the battle. Give La France!
